A Smart Home works something like this. I wake up to the pre-set alarm that tells my smart curtains to flag up. My fitness wearable communicates with the sensors to pass on the message that I am awake. Sensors adjust the temperature and activate other smart devices to complete my “Good Morning” scene. My meditation app prompts my lesson, and the fitness app indicates the goals for the day! The smart routine configured switches on the smart water heater. After a hot bath, I tell my voice assistant to brew some coffee for me.

Wouldn’t it be great for a Smart Home to be able to do all this?

Behind the Scenes of a working Smart Home.

For consumers, there are many underlying factors that motivate them to invest in a smart home. Some of them are to add security, convenience, increase comfort, conserve energy, or just control the home from anywhere. But, to achieve any of these, consumers are compelled to purchase a suite of products from a single brand or make single unit purchases that belong to pre-integrated brands. In the case of a multi-brand effort, the consumer needs to shell down a heavy price to achieve seamless integration.

For CSPs, delivering such well-choreographed smart home solutions increases overheads. They incur high costs for service buy-in and adoption. This takes them away from capitalizing on the growing demand for smart homes. Not only for consumers, but CSPs too would be involved in price wars, brand affiliations, and little choice to improve the service offerings.

The real problem is the lack of a Smart Home Platform.

To implement a multi-branded smart home requires building interfaces with multiple APIs. It involves bulky customization of networks. Some of the desired routines and experiences cannot be achieved due to a lack of interoperability. This may compel the user to dissuade from either using certain devices or purchasing expensive options. All leading to a disappointed smart home consumer.

To deliver on par smart home experiences, CSPs end up investing more resources than necessary. Thin ARPU or a lengthy duration to break-even are a consequence to this. Also, CSPs have to depend on third-party OEMs and their affiliated app services to satisfy their consumer base. This is a risky, non-scalable, rigid and slow growth proposition that CSPs set up for.

This can be changed with a one-stop Smart Home Platform that is designed to enable flexible and scalable business doing, caters to multiple use cases with a single unified app, and responds to consumer needs with a growing range of interoperable smart devices and dependable app services.
